Situated at the mouth of the Breede River, Witsand offers 4km of white sandy beaches, surrounded by magnificent species of Cape Fynbos within this Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site. The central feature of the Malgas / Witsand area is the magnificent Breede River, one of the largest, most navigable rivers in South Africa and a birdwatchers' paradise.

Can you imagine the thrill of watching a baby whale being born, then tossed into the air by the 'midwife' in order for it to gasp its first breath of air? Moodies Well Walk follows the sandy eastern sweep of St. Sebastian Bay for 4km, to a well dug by a Scotsman in the 19th century to store water on camping and fishing trips. The walk should be done at lowtide. Duration of the walk is approximately 8km and it should take up to 3 hours; out- and return.

Whether it's the desire to be close to nature and its gifts, or to participate in adventure- eco and sporting activities, Witsand has it all. We are situated in an area rich in its historical past and hugely conscious of its natural heritage and eco-sensitive surroundings.

Our safe, tranquil beaches are for walking and swimming, beautiful in the windless and mild winter days. Various eco hikes, 4x4 eco trails and biking trails are available with an opportunity to spot some of the abundant bird life and diverse Fynbos.

Enjoy a multitude of activities at the Breede River Lodge – from relaxing water taxi's, deep sea fishing charters, skippered boat hire, bird watching, guided excursions, walks and kayaking. A most popular excursion has become a boat trip to the 'Bush Pub'. This is situated along the river with many interesting features to see and experience. To reach the opposite side of the Breede River from Witsand to Cape Infanta, people have to make use of one of the only hand - operated ferries in the world. This is known as the Pont and operated from sunrise to sunset, one of the most popular tourist's attractions. Witsand is renowned for all kinds of water sport, swimming, surfing, wind surfing, deep sea and river fishing, rock boat and fly fishing, river cruises, and one of the most sought after kite boarding locations in the world !!, canoeing, sailing, spear fishing and snorkeling.
